Acne scars and dark circles are the worst yet most common skin problems to date. Although there are countless skin care products and medicated creams available in the market which claim to does the same, I always go for all-natural, chemical-free DIY cures that work the best.
Turmeric is also known as Curcuma longa and Indian saffron. It originated from both Indian and Chinese herbal medicine. Turmeric comes from the roots of Curcuma longa plant. If you ever look for it at the grocery store, you definitely can’t miss it because of its bright yellow color. It is said to be an extremely effective anti-inflammatory agent and has been able to cure certain conditions such as toothaches, menstrual pains, bruises and even flatulence.
It is safe to say that it doesn’t come as a surprise that turmeric is slowly gaining popularity for its effectiveness when it comes to fighting acne considering how it is a great anti-inflammatory. Studies have even shown that turmeric can reduce bacteria growth that is responsible for acne significantly, by a whopping 50% to 96% to be exact. It also has brightening properties which can help with acne scars and dark under eye circles. Have we convinced you of how effective turmeric can be as a treatment for acne?
Listed below are a couple of face pack recipes so that you too can incorporate turmeric into your beauty regime.
5 Homemade recipes to treat acne scars and dark circles under the eyes:
Turmeric + Rice + Yogurt Paste
In a video that has since reached more than 5 million views, Nepalese-born beauty guru Promise Phan discusses how she has incorporated turmeric into her beauty routine to achieve acne-free, clear and bright skin, not to mention dark circles free, too. She mixes 2 tablespoons of turmeric powder with 1 tablespoon of rice flour. She also adds that you have a choice of adding either yogurt for oily skin (if you don’t have yogurt right now, you can use milk as a substitute) or olive oil for dry skin. Lastly, she adds in honey. Apply the mixture onto your face and leave it on for 20 minutes and then wash it off. If you have troubled skin, she recommends applying it thrice a week.
Turmeric Sandalwood Powder
Another great mask to try is the “turmeric and sandalwood powder”. To prepare, it just use equal parts of the turmeric and sandalwood powder. Then, add rose water to create a paste. Leave this on for 15 to 20 minutes and then rinse it off with lukewarm water.
Turmeric and Lemon Juice
This mask will work great for those of you who have dark circles under the eyes. Just use about 2 tablespoons of turmeric and mix in some lemon juice to create a paste. If you are afraid that the lemon may be too harsh on your skin, we advise to dilute it with water to lessen the stinging feeling. This mask is great since both of the ingredients have pretty strong brightening properties so they can lighten not only acne scars but also dark circles under the eyes.
Turmeric + Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is also known for its antiseptic and antibacterial properties. So, imagine how potent a mask made of turmeric and apple cider vinegar would be. You can also add raw honey and milk to this concoction. For the honey, we would recommend that you use Manuka honey since it is raw and unprocessed which means that its anti-inflammatory properties are stronger.
Turmeric + Water
Lastly, this is the easiest out of the bunch; you can use turmeric with water. Half a teaspoon of turmeric and half a teaspoon of water will do. You can use this simple mixture as a sort of spot treatment. If you have a zit, just make a paste making turmeric and water, apply it on the spot and it will go away.
Remember only to use natural and pure turmeric as some turmeric powders in the market are more processed and unnatural. Some people have also complained about the possible yellow stains these masks leave on the skin. You can easily remove them by using makeup wipes. But we would recommend you do a simple and chemical-free yogurt mask right after the turmeric mask. The yogurt does a great job of removing any stains left behind. Speaking of stains, remember only to use shirts or containers that you wouldn’t mind ruining, since these masks will leave long-term marks. We recommend you use glass bowls and gloves to avoid that situation.
Who knew that something found in your cupboard was the solution to your skin problems? Turmeric is not only great as a spice, but is also surprisingly effective for removing any acne scars, sun spots and under eye bags and circles.
