Since after Ramadan ended, my routine has been screwed. We all know how we partied (ate) all night in Ramadan. My sleep-wake routine is all messed up. Consequently, my life has been a mess.. I haven’t been feeling much productive either lately. Because I’m on my summer holidays and the things that I have to do are on my own choice, no external pressure or deadline. Newton’s first law of motion “An object at rest cannot move unless acted upon by an external pressure” fits perfectly on me. 😉 So, this is the perfect time for self-improvement. I need it more than ever.

If you’re one of those people who get tired after doing nothing or little. If you’re one of those people who complain more than they actually do. If you’re one of those people who find it difficult to get out of bed in the morning and then regret it all day. If you’re one of those people who find it difficult to leave their phone at night and go to sleep at the right time. If you’re one of those people who find it difficult to complete their do-to list because of their procrastination.

Then this article is for all of you. Here are 25 self-improvement tips, which I think are going to be (pretty close to) practical. So here we go on a journey of “Self-improvement”. I can sense how futile it might sound to you but trust me it’s going to work. After all I’m writing this for myself as well as you people. (Selfish much?)


25 Practical Tips to Improve ourselves and be More Productive:

1.   An early start

Wake up early in the morning. I know how tired are you of hearing this and how cliché it may sound. But turns out the rhyme we are oh-so tired of hearing all our childhood “Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise” is true. I used to be a person who loved waking up in the morning and going for a walk, only a few months ago. Trust me on this, it’s the most serene time of the day. You will love the cool breeze, the sunrise and the beautiful early morning sky. It will give you a boost of energy enough to get through the day, with tea or coffee, obviously. Only a light walk will do the job. Don’t do heavy exercise all of a sudden, it can make your muscles sore. P.s it will make you sleep better at night too. It’s definitely worth a try.

2.   Let your favourite thing to do be the first thing in the morning

Start your day by doing what you love, be it reading, writing, music or whatever. Do it for at least 20 minutes. Not all of us can meditate and this serves as the best meditation for me.

3.   Every day to-do list

Start making an everyday to-do list. Jot down the things that you want to accomplish every day in your journal.

4.   Keeping and dumping habits

List a bad habit that you want to get rid of and a good habit that you want to adopt or to extend. Check it at night and reflect at your progress.

5.   Look good for yourself

Put some effort in looking good, even if you have to stay at home all day. Get ready! I know it may sound a little lame. But it really gives you a boost of confidence. Nothing feels better than getting ready for yourself. (Yeah, high-five forever alone people.) You can mess with that eyeliner or your hair and be completely okay with it, unless you’re a perfectionist.

6.   Breakfast is more important than you think

Have a good breakfast. Sounds lame (again?) but breakfast is the most important meal of the day, you should pay attention to it.

7.   Talk to the people in front of you rather than the ones in your phone

Communicate with your family and the people around you. Leave your phone and talk to them. Engage yourself in healthy conversations rather than stalking people on Instagram.

8.   Let them know that you care for them

Help your mom with the chores. The smile on her face will give you the satisfaction that you need. And if you are married help your spouse with the household or the office work. The little things that you think do not even matters are the ones that can save the day. So let them know how much they mean to you often and fill the vase with fresh flowers. Do it all and makes them feel loved like they deserve.

9.   All smiles at the start of the day/ A happy or positive start

If you have to go to your office or school, be there in high spirits, a happy face and a clean heart. Forget it if the previous day was not as good. Consider it as a new start and make the most of it.

10. Make someone smile

Don’t miss a chance to be kind and to make a stranger smile. Trust me, by doing this, it’s only yourself not anyone else you’re doing a favour to.

11. Keep a positive eye for the things around you

See the world, its beauty and its madness with a positive eye. Take it all in. Let it inspire you.

12. Anti-envy policy

Learn to be happy for others. It comes naturally to all of us to be envious of others. We all have been there and you’d be lying if you say otherwise. I know it that we can’t help it at times but be jealous of others. But if you make a conscious effort to turn your envy into happiness and fuel for yourself to move forward, it will become a habit.

13. Gratitude!

Be grateful for whatever that you have. Eradicate complaining from your life. Whenever you have an urge to complain, look at all the blessings that you have, think about the people who are praying for what you take for granted.

14. No grudges

Forgive others and yourself. Know that everyone makes mistakes. Imagine yourself in other people’s shoes whenever you’re angry and think about what you would’ve liked to be done to you. Never hold grudges against anyone. Forgive and forget.

15. Be yourself

Be true to who you are. You’re not fooling anyone else but you by pretending to be someone that you’re not. You should know that the world needs you as you are. You are here for a reason that only YOU can accomplish.

16. Take responsibility

Take charge of yourself, your decisions, your mistakes and your feelings. Be true to them. It’s only you who is affected by your mistakes, who feels what you feel and who’s going to live your decisions. Don’t blame others if anything does not turn out quite right. You can always do it yourself or you can give others the power to do it. At the end it’s only your choice. Own it!

17. Embrace yourself

Love yourself enough not to get disheartened by other people’s opinions on how should you walk, talk and look. I’ve been there, I’ve been told that many times. Once you restore your confidence that you were born with, it doesn’t matter at all. Once you start to feel comfortable in your own skin, people will shut up. Even if they don’t, you wouldn’t care. You will be amazed by how the things which use to make you cry on your misery will start to make you laugh at their misery.

18. Treat yourself

Reward yourself often. You deserve it and you need it.

19. Live a planned life/ Be prepared for what coming in your way next

Make long-term plans. As they say

“Live like there’s no tomorrow and learn like you’ll live forever.”

So plan like you’ll live forever keeping in mind that this life is very short to do anything else but what you love.

20. Know the power of your dreams/ Make your dream turn into reality

Believe in your dreams. Use it in whatever way you can to contribute to the world. It wouldn’t only improve your own-self but it will also improve the world and turn it into a better place.

21. Don’t let your failure take over you

Never let failure drain you down. Learn from your them, don’t let it get on your nerves.

22. Give respect and get respected/ Give to others what you expect from them

Respect others’ opinions. If you see something you don’t approve, ignore it but don’t judge it. Accept everything as it comes, unless it’s affecting you or the society.

23. Walk away from negativity

Distance yourself from negative people and situations. Learn how to walk away. Avoid gossip and arguments as much as you can.

24. Read!

Read every day. A quote, an article or a page of a best-seller. Reading is the best thing anyone could do for self-improvement.

25. No competition with anyone but yourself!

Never compare yourself with others. Everyone has a different story and is on their own journey. You have no idea what they’ve been through to get here. The only person you should be trying to be better than is what you were yesterday. Compete with yourself only. Don’t be too hard on yourself either. Strive for excellence not perfection.

  1. I can totally relate to the paragraph of who this post is for.. as I do almost all of them, sadly! I have just recently started a to-do list, in fact I just bought it this weekend! So far it has helped me to get things done that need to and if I don’t finish all the tasks, I just put it on the list again for the next day!
